BYU Rodeo Club

When I first moved in the domr the Brown Twins from Mesa, Arizona got me to go to a rodeo club dance. I had been dating a girl named Cricket Morris. I had broken up with her by telling her I was getting too serious and I wasn't ready for a serious relationship. I wanted to let her down easy. She heard I was going to the dance, so she went to.

Kaye Cowley and her cousin, Stana Cowley, went to the dance, too. Kaye caught my eye at the dance. We danced together. After the dance I called her up and made a date for the next Friday. I borrowed my cousin, EL's, car for the date. I went to the dorm to pick her up. She wasn't there.

Right after that I went to South Dakota to spend Christmas vacation at my sisters. I told her I had met the girl I was going to marry.

In January, the Rodeo Club had a box lunch social, where the guys bid on a box lunch and they ate with the girl whose lunch they bought. I asked Kaye's cousin, Stana, which one was Kaye's box. She said it was the one with a little red horse on it. I outbid everyone else on Kaye's box. When I went up to pay for Kaye's box lunch and Kaye came up, I looked at her and said in loud words, "Oh no, not you!" in front of everyone. Kaye was very embarrassed. Stana told Kaye later on that she had told me which box was hers. We ate together and I dated her from then on.

I was going to ride bulls and broncs in the college rodeo, so I practiced on a barrell that was suspended by 4 ropes. Four guys would shake it and try to knock you off of it.

The week after we got married in May, the rodeo came up. Kaye paid my entrance fees to the bull and bareback bronc. My friend, Ron Canfield also signed up for these two events. We went down to see which bull I had drawn. The guy showed me the bull and said, "I wouldn't be so anxious to ride that bull. He'll not only throw you off, but eat you up!"  When I got thrown off I landed on my feet so I could run. The bronc threw me off and stepped on my back. I decided that rodeoing was not meant for me.
