When I entered dental school as a freshman we had an orientation meeting by Dean Toccini and the staff. He told us to decide which door you want to leave by, the front door (graduation) or the back door (kicked out of school). If you get one F and I don't care which class it is in, you are out of here.
I was surprised by the number of classes and labs. The requirements were overwhelming. We called the Physiology teacher-Kalstom-the Skull because he was known to flunk a lot of students in Physiology and Pharmacology. He flunked 9 of the 53 guys in our class the freshman year. Everyone lives in the fear of flunking. we had gross anatomy. Two students disected one cadaver from the neck down the first year. After that I couldn't eat pork roasts. The Anatomy lab was on the fourth floor. The janitor of the school was black and named Jackson. One day one of the students stayed late and got on a table and covered up with a sheet. When Jackson came in to clean the anatomy lab, the student sat up and Jackson ran out and told the Dean he wouldn't clean the lab anymore, so they hired my classmate, Joe Muldowong to clean the lab.
After we had a lecture in the auditorium they would turn off the lights to show slides. When they turned them back on, half the people were asleep. Our bedrooms at City Housing were all upstairs. I sat at my desk by the window to study, sometimes all night. One night late I heard a car slam his brakes once and stop. Then I heard a motorcycle put-putting around out there. I was curious and looked out the window and suddenly all kinds of gunshots started. First the guy in the car had kidnapped his 18 year old girl friend with a gun from her home. Her family called the police and the policemen on the motorcycle was looking for them. The girl jumped out of the car and the boyfriend shot her with one shot. Then the policeman opened fire at the kidnapper and fired lots of shots. He hit the windows of the car and some hit our cement building, but he never hit the kidnapper. The kidnapper gave up and the girl was taken away in an ambulance.
Our next door neighbor on one side named Guy Antell and his wife Govi was a senior at the dental school. They had 3 kids. She was a kleptomaniac and when Kaye had her babysit for us she stole a bunch of Kaye's stuff. We walked in and she was going through out stuff. She told us that someone broke into our apartment while she was next door and she was just putting our stuff back. Since he was a friend and a senior in dental school, we believed her. Often when she came over Kaye would find jewelry and clothes missing. Finally one day Kaye saw Govi wearing one of her sweaters and told me. I went and told the guy that Kaye had seen Govi wearing her sweater. He brought over a lot of stuff that she had and Kaye took the things that were hers. I guess the other dental students knew about her problem, but they hadn't warned us.
Just before the end of that school year she went to southern California and came back with a bunch of stuff she had stolen from her mother. Her mother called us and asked us to watch out and make sure their kids were okay. Two weeks later Guy graduated and the moved back to southern California. We later heard that Guy divorced her.
