Gold & Green Ball in Virden

When I was in high school at Duncan I went to the Gold and Green Ball with Nita Johns (my step-cousin) at the Virden Ward. I was about 15 years old.

During the dance someone came in and told me that my cousin, Donny Santee, was outside in trouble. I went out to see Donny ( a non-member) laying half out of his car. He was very drunk. I'm  standing there wondering what to do with him when Bishop Jones walked by. He didn't say a word, just looked at us.

The next day while I was working at a service staion in Duncan, which was 6 miles from Virden, a deputy sheriff came over to talk to me. He was laughing his head off. He told me that Bishop Jones had called him and told him that I wasn't welcome in Virden anymore. This was a town where I was born in, my friends lived in, my uncle Hyde was Bishop Jones' counselor in the bishopric. The deputy thought that was the funniest thing had had ever heard. I laughed, too, but I was really embarrassed and felt bad. I hadn't done anything wrong. I have resented that since then and it caused me to feel badly about the church.
