One of our other favorite things for our family to do was to snow ski. We started by taking skiing lessons at BYU for PE. Kaye took it her first year and skiied at Timp Haven up Provo Canyon. After we got married she talked me into taking skiing lessons the next year for PE. When I graduated from BYU I went to dental school in San Francisco and our skiing went on hold. The time we really started to ski again was after I finished orthodontic school and moved to Santa Cruz. We started to teach our kids to ski when they were pretty young. Brad was 5, Greg was 7, Cindy was 13 and Cathy was 15. We took them up to Squaw Valley, California. The kids could ski free if their parents had lift tickets. We got them some lessons and Brad skiied between Kaye's skis that whole first season. We also took them to ski in Utah during Christmas vacation. Brad would get mad and throw his poles and gloves on the ground and didn't want to get up when he fell. Finally the girls and boys got better and better. Soon we couldn't keep up with them.
During this time, we liked to go up to Lake Tahoe. We decided we wanted to get a condo up there. We won a big jackpot on one of the machines and decided we would go ahead and get a condo we had looked at on the North side of Heavenly Valley. It was a neat two bedroom, two story condo up the mountain a block or so from the lift entrance. It had a living room, dining room, two bathrooms. One had a large hot tub in it and it had a deck outside. It had a nice kitchen, too, and a fireplace. We really liked it. After that we mostly skied at the North side of Heavenly Valley. We took other ski trips to Utah, Canada and Colorado.
Cindy really got into skiing and took it for a class at BYU. She got a season pass for Sundance, which used to be called Timp Haven. She went every chance she had and got into doing tricks like somersaults, etc. She was really good. Greg and Brad were too good for us and so Kaye and I skied by ourselves most of the time. Cathy and her family also liked to use the condo and ski some, but it was really expensive for lift tickets. Cindy and Rob skied after they got married, but not too often because of the expense.
