Moving to San Francisco to go to P & S Dental School

We had a 1957 Plymouth. We rented a U Haul trailer and filled with with our furniture and stuff. We left Cathy and Cindy with Marjorie in Provo while we went to look for a place to live in San Francisco. First we went to my brother Grant's place in Ukiah and dropped off the trailer and then we drove to San Francisco to look for a place to live. It was very discouraging because there was not a decent place to live that we could afford. Grant had lived in City Housing when he went to dental school. We went to the City Housing office to apply for a place to rent. They told us that we needed a copy of our marriage license to apply. We had to drive back up to Ukiah (about 100 miles) to get our marriage license out of the U Haul. It was in our desk, which we had put in the U Haul trailer first. We had to unpack the whole trailer to get the license out and then repack it and go back to San Francisco. We were thrilled to get an apartment in Sunnydale Housing unit by the Cow Palace at $35 a month. They were two story buildings made out of concrete so people couldn't destroy them too easily. Then we went back to Ukiah and got our trailer and took it to Sunnydale to unload it. That was the first time Kaye's stomach relaxed. She was so upset because we couldn't find a place to live.

As asoon as we were settled we called Mary and she flew out to Sacramento and brought Cathy and Cindy. We met them at the airport. Then we went to Mary's sister, Laureen's house. While we were there the State Fair was going on in Sacramento. We all went to the fair. Since it was August, it was REALLY hot. Then we took the kids back to San Francisco and I started Dental School at PS.

Previously, a few months before, Kaye and I came out to P & S for an interview. We were really surprised to see the old wooden building the dental school was in. It was on 14th and Mission Street in San Francisco. It didn't impress me. I was expecting a nice looking school.
