My brother, Grant, had started Dental School at College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1948. Mom had died February of '49. Sis had Diane on 3/21/49. In June of 1949 Dad, Laurence, Sis, Larry (2 years), Diane (3 months) took me to San Francisco to see Grant and Agnes May. We went to the playland by the beach. Grant lived in City Housing on Applegate. On our way home we went through Death Valley.
Playing cards at Duncan High
We found how to get into a locked spare room in the basement. We went into the wrestling room and up high there was a crawl space that went underneath the school building to this locked room. There was an old table and light. We used to sneak in there during school and play poker. No one ever knew where we were.
A Close Call
When I was a sophomore or junior I was at church and Monty Allred, Charles Merrill, and another guy wanted to know if I wanted to go to Safford, 30 miles away, with them. I said yes and went home and got ready. I waited and waited but they left me behind. I was disappointed so I got a date with Beverly Cummings and we drove to Safford. I was driving around town to see if I could see those guys. I never saw them. On the way back the fellow in front of me hit a horse and it really messed his car up. The next morning I found out that my friends had been in an accident. They had picked up 3 girls. A car hit them and sent them into a spin. Everyone was thrown out. Monty hit the back of his head on the pavement and was in a coma for months. He had permanent brain damage. The others were thrown in the gravel and all cut up. I felt very lucky that they did leave me behind. I feel like my mom was watching over me.
